Kevens Prévaris (Limbé, Haiti, 1979)
Born in Limbé, in northern Haiti, Kevens Prévaris belongs to the generation that renewed Haitian painting in the early 2000s: he is one of the founders of the Loray movement. He went on to train in Brussels, at the École nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre, where he earned a Master’s degree in painting (2011–2014).
His painting holds together what might seem irreconcilable. In Chaos (2023), trees painted leaf by leaf, hills and distant landscapes emerge among broad translucent planes, organic forms that fold and interpenetrate, and drips left to run freely. Precision of detail and energy of gesture do not exclude each other: they answer one another. The eye finds no single point of rest; it moves, recognises a bird, loses a horizon, finds another.
This instability is not disorder. It carries the memory of a country sorely tested, that of a generation marked by the 2010 earthquake, and the will to bring something new into being. Colour, frank and luminous, plays the leading role: not as decoration, but as a force of reconstruction.
